Rare jongens, die Romeinen!Rare jongens, die Romeinen! (a word-by word translation would be Strange boys, those Romans!) is the Dutch translation for Obelix's motto Ils sont fous ces Romains!. According to Dik T. Winter, either Myriam Gianotten or Jan van Erp is responsible for this translation. One of them made this beautiful translation around 1960 when they were working for the Dutch comics magazine Pep. I do not know how well-known the original French motto is in French speaking countries but its Dutch translation is quite famous in Dutch speaking communities. The idiom Rare jongens is a contribution which the Asterix books have made to the Dutch language. This page contains a list with all the occurrences of Obelix's motto and variants in the Asterix books that I know of. The idea for compiling such a list arose in March 1993 when Dik T. Winter and I both competed in a Dutch Asterix Quiz. Question 7 required from us finding the book in which a Roman used Obelix's motto. It turned out that Romans had used Obelix's expression in four books. Dik and I became interested in this motto and we decided to try to find all occurrences of the motto. The result is the list which can be found below. Dik is responsible for creating the largest part of the list back in 1993. Since then I have checked the list and added diacritics, capital characters and punctuation marks. I have tried to find more occurrences and was able to add about 20.
