Albina is the capital of the district Marowijne. It lies on the west bank of the Marowijne river, which forms the border between Suriname and French Guiana. Albina was founded by the German immigrant A. Kappler in 1846. The village became an important point for the trade with the maroons (gold, wood and agricultural products). From the sixties onwards tourism was the most important source of income for Albina.
Sadly, Albina was almost completely destroyed in the rebellion fights at the end of the eighties.
