The Johan Adolf Pengel airport is Suriname's only international airport. It is located about 50km south of Paramaribo. Formerly it was called Zanderij but at the end of the eighties it was renamed in honor of Suriname's most famous politician, Mr. Johan Adolf Pengel. Mr. Pengel was Suriname's prime-minister from 1963 until 1969. The J. A. Pengel Airport is used only for international flights. The airport at Zorg en Hoop in Paramaribo is the primary airport for all domestic flights. An important expansion of the J. A. Pengel Airport was made by American soldiers stationed in Suriname during the Second World War.
