This is an overview of the course Language Databases (in Swedish: Språkdatabaser) that will be taught in the Winter term of 1998 at the department of Linguistics at the University of Uppsala. There is a page for this course on World Wide Web at the address:
http://stp.ling.uu.se/~erikt/sd98/
The course will be given by Erik Tjong Kim Sang. I can be reached in room B382, HSC building, Kyrkogårdgatan 10, Uppsala, telephone (018) 4711175, e-mail erikt@stp.ling.uu.se
You can take a look at summaries of the evaluation results of the this course: the midcourse evaluation.
The schedule mentions date, time and location of the lectures. All lectures will be given in the HSC building. The subject in each lecture could have been indicated by section numbers from the course book by Date and others.

This course has no obligatory sessions. The test will take place at Polacksbacken, Lägerhyddsvägen hus 5, phone (018) 53 1690.
There is a practice test with answers available. The file is in postscript format.
The students will receive two home work assignments: one with exercises about chapter 6 and 7 of the course book and one with exercises about the chapters 10 and 11. These exercises will involve some practical work with database operations.
In this class the students will design and implement a part of a language database. Here they will use the knowledge they have obtained from the theoretical sessions for designing and implementing part of a language database. As working material for implementing the database they can use the text material developed by the class in the first assignment. That corpus will contain tags for sentences and structures that are larger than sentences. Most alternatives for the lab assignment deal with designing word level tag structures. For this assignment a report has to be written. This report will partly determine the grade of the course.
Note: the alignment assignment that was part of the course editions of 1996 and 1997 will be an optional part of this course.
Students will receive a grade between 0 and 10 for the project, the home work assignments and the written test. To pass this course the student will have to get a grade of 6.0 or higher for the lab report, an average grade of 6.0 or higher for the home work assignments, and a grade of 6.0 or higher for the test. In order to receive the well pass grade the student should qualify for the pass grade and obtain a lab report grade of at least 8.0 while the average of the test grade, the home work assignment and the project grade is also 8.0 or higher (the report grade counts twice).
