The seventeenth stage was the toughest of this Tour, with five climbs. Twenty riders escaped from the peloton but they were all caught before the fourth summit. The peloton broke into several groups with Contador and the two Schleck brothers in the leading group of three riders. Frank Schleck won the stage and Alberto Contador held on to the yellow jersey.
After a second place in Sunday's mountain stage, Sweden's Tore Högman claimed the first place in today's stage. This is not his first stage victory: earlier he won stages in 2002 and 2006. Hilary Sinclair (UK) was second today while third place was shared between Erik Hom (USA) and Wicher Otten (The Netherlands). After the seventeenth stage, we have a new name at the top of the overall rankings: Bas Denters of The Netherlands. Mickael Vasquez of France goes up to second place and former leader Rune Førsund (Norway) drops to third. The difference between the top three in the overall rankings is now only two points.
