The sixteenth stage of this year's race had an interesting profile: about 40 km up, 40 km down, another 40 km up and yet another 40 km down. A group of 20 riders escaped early in the race and eight of them stayed ahead of the yellow jersey group. Mikel Astarloza escaped from the leading group and won the stage. Alberto Contador had no problems defending his yellow jersey.
The breakaway group prevented large scores in the game. The sixteenth stage was won by Debby Crusio of The Netherlands, the only participant with Mikel Astarloza on the top position in her team. Ras Zbych (Czech Republic) was second and Monica Armstrong (New Zealand) claimed third place. In the top of the overall rankings, there are some interesting developments. Rune Førsund remains the overall leader but second and third place are now taken by Bas Denters of The Netherlands and Mickael Vasquez of France. The upcoming mountain stages and time trial promise some more changes at the top of the overall rankings. Watch out for Keven Fitzpatrick, Arild Nygaard and Bryan Stout.
