Fabian Cancellara of Switzerland won the first stage of the 2009 Tour de France. In the 15.5 km individual time trial, he was 18 seconds faster than number two Alberto Contador. Bradley Wiggins of the UK claimed third place. Cancellara was awarded the first yellow jersey of this year.
