TdF Stage 5: July 11, 2018

Seven men escaped in the 204 km fifth stage from Lorient to Quimper. The final two were caught 12 km before the line. By that time, several top sprinters had been dropped by the leading pack. Peter Sagan of Slovakia won the uphill sprint and claimed his second stage victory of the race. Greg van Avermaet of Belgium was seventh and kept the yellow jersey.

Today's stage top ten was difficult to predict since it contained a mix of sprinters and GC contenders. Yet stage winner Bastin Verweij of The Netherlands obtained an excellent score (77 points). Göran Stridh (Sweden) was second and Rhoda Walker (UK) claimed third place. The new overall leader in the game is Roger Cageot of France. The overall second place is shared by three participants from The Netherlands: Francis Stalpers, Ton de Groot and Wim Penninx.

Today illness prevented Michael Matthews of Australia to start the stage. He was a member of 214 game participant teams.
